The first Cultural Competence Lunch & Learn of the 2010-11 school year will be held September 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Johnston REC in Room 18.
Description: Students must have a safe, supported learning environment to grow and thrive. How are our schools measuring up? Since the passage of the Safe Schools Act, where are we now? Where are we going? The new law will protect all students from bullying and harassment, specifically enumerating categories that include race, gender, religion, sexual orientation and gender identity. The landmark bill, which was passed with bipartisan support, makes Iowa the 10th state to protect students from bullying and harassment based on sexual orientation and the fifth to protect students on the basis of gender expression. At this Lunch & Learn, a panel will discuss the law and its implications for Iowa Schools.
