Greetings Heartland!
It’s an honor and a privilege to be writing to you as the Interim Chief Administrator. I am very excited to have this opportunity to provide leadership for our agency this year, and if the first six days of duty are any indicator, I know the remaining days in this year will be very full.
As many of you know, over the last couple of years we’ve experienced a significant amount of change in our agency as we implemented our current model built on partnerships. We are not planning to initiate any major organizational changes this year, as the model we have in place is strongly supported by our board and is going very well. Nevertheless, we know change is a constant in our world, and this year is no different. We know we have changes in leadership, we have changes among our colleagues, we have changes in some policies and procedures and we always have changes in those we serve. I know change is hard, but I hope you will take it in stride and make the best of the opportunities these inevitable changes bring.
I believe in our agency, in our mission and core values, in the leadership team, in our staff and in our many partnerships, both internal and external. I believe our partnerships are key to our continued growth, and I believe each of you is key to building those partnerships in whatever role you serve in our agency. I believe we are caring, passionate, collaborative, pro-active and cutting edge in all aspects of our work and that we are continuing to build on those core values as we move the mission of our agency forward. Because we are all those things, we will continue to have a significant impact on the achievement and growth of those we serve.
As we begin this new school year and I begin this new role, I hope I have the chance to meet each and every one of you. I’d like to encourage you to introduce yourself to me when you see me and feel free to e-mail or call anytime if you have questions, comments or ideas you’d like me to know. It’s going to take the team, and I believe our greatest strength comes when we team together for the benefit of those we serve.
Have a great year. I look forward to seeing you soon.
Sheila

July 2009 Heartland Board of Directors Meeting Recap
The July 2009 Heartland Board of Directors meeting was held on July 1, 2009.
Dr. David Tilly reviewed the timeline and process involved in the 2005 chief administrator search. He provided a draft timeline of the 2009-10 chief administrator search process. The only decision that has been made to date has been that board member Dr. Earl Bridgewater has agreed to oversee the search firm Request For Proposals (RFPs). He will do so in coordination with all board members. The profiles of several search firms were sent to board members for review. The list will be narrowed to three firms in August with interviews held in September.
The Board will hold its annual retreat on July 27.
It was noted that board members Ms. Ann Wilson and Dr. Jane Bell attended the retirement party for fellow board member Dr. George Jackson from Iowa State University.

Warehouse Services Available to All Employees
All Heartland staff members should keep in mind that the services of the Agency’s warehouse are available year round to those who need to store items that they don’t use on a regular basis or don’t have room for in their offices. These types of items can be boxed and marked with labels that identify their contents, the owner of the contents and how long the boxes need to be stored.
If boxes need to be retrieved from the warehouse, they will be delivered to a Heartland office within 48 hours of the request. The warehouse is large enough to accommodate whatever you might need stored, so don’t hesitate to send anything and everything. If you are interested in storing items at the warehouse and would like boxes and labels or have any questions about the warehousing process, please contact Dustin Gean at dgean@aea11.k12.ia.us or ext. 14460.
