UNI to Offer Hot Topics in Education Webinars for Educators

The University of Northern Iowa College of Education will host a Hot Topics in Education webinar “Iowa’s Research & Development School-Strategic Directions and Iowa Connectivity,” at 4 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 23.

This webinar will present the vision of Iowa’s Research & Development School (R&D), research currently occurring at the R&D School, existing collaborative partnerships with K-12 school districts and new partner opportunities with the R&D School to build a statewide learning network.

This webinar will be presented by Lyn Countryman, interim director and professor at Malcolm Price Laboratory School (MPLS) and Jody Stone, professor at MPLS. For more information on these webinars or to register, visit www.uni.edu/coe/webinars.

NCLB Waiver Videos, PowerPoint & Survey

The Iowa Department of Education posted four short videos and a detailed PowerPoint on its website describing the requirements for the State’s NCLB waiver plan. A short survey has also been posted so stakeholders can give the Department feedback. The videos, PowerPoint, survey and regional meeting schedule with ICN sites are listed and can be accessed at
http://educateiowa.gov/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2586.

These videos will be shown at the regional meetings that began on January 31 and conclude on February 9. (Reminder: a regional meeting will be held at Heartland on Feb. 7.) Materials will not be available at the AEA sites. If you cannot attend the meetings, watch these videos online and complete the survey, which is open until noon on February 10.

Invitation to Participate in Poverty Simulation at Urbandale CSD

The Urbandale Schools will be hosting a poverty simulation on Sat., March 3 at 9:00 a.m. at the Urbandale High School Media Center. Educators, parents, students and community members are invited to this unique, interactive experience that helps people begin to understand what it is like to live in poverty.

The poverty simulation is a unique, interactive experience that helps people begin to understand what life is like with a shortage of money and an abundance of stress. The simulation involves 44-80 participants who take on the roles of members of 26 families, all facing a variety of challenging but typical circumstances such as homelessness, job loss and child care issues.

February 2012 Educator Connection Newsletter

Last week the Communications Department sent out the latest issue of its Educator Connection newsletter. Click here to download the newsletter. It was e-mailed to all educators in the Heartland area and is intended to keep our educators better connected to the Agency and to the programs and services we offer.
