Print & Production to Hold Open House June 20-24

School personnel are often surprised when they learn all that can be produced through Heartland’s Print & Production services. As you hopefully know, we can provide basic printing and copying services, graphic design services and a whole host of other production services. Many find that using our Print & Production services is convenient and cost-effective.

In order to help showcase our wide range of capabilities and products, we will be hosting a weeklong Print & Production Open House at the Johnston REC June 20-24 when many school staff will be taking advantage of summer classes.

If you hold professional development trainings with school district staff from now until June 24, please include this graphic in your PowerPoint presentation and show it during breaks and/or at the end of your training to encourage school staff to check out our Print Center.

Thank you for helping us publicize this event. Heartland staff members are also more than welcome to come by and ask questions!

Remember to Set Out-of-Office Messages If Off Contract This Summer

If you will be off contract for the summer, remember to set your out-of-offices messages on your agency e-mail and phone extension. Let callers know what day you will be leaving and what day you will return. It may also be helpful to leave alternate contact information or the name of a support staff member who may be able to provide immediate assistance.

2011-12 HEA and Teamsters Employment Packages Announced

We are pleased to announce that the Heartland AEA Board of Directors has approved conditions of employment for the Heartland Education Association (HEA) and Teamster employment groups for the 2011-2012 fiscal year. Below is a summary of key points for each employment group.

Heartland Education Association – Certified Union

The settlement is a total package of 3.056% (compensation plus benefits, including Teacher Salary Supplement). This increase includes step advancement on the salary schedule (for those not at the top of the schedule), increase in IPERS employer contribution from 6.95% to 8.07% and an increase in health insurance of 10%.

Highlights of changes include seniority definition language under Article 11, long-term disability and prescription drug changes under Article 16 and Article 18 changes to the distribution of Teacher Salary Supplement moneys as described below:

In the 2010-11 contract year, each eligible employee represented by the Heartland Education Association received moneys based on a percent-of-current-salary-schedule. The percent-of-current-salary was based upon the total teacher salary supplement funds less an estimate of the benefits payable on those salaries, divided by the total of all 2010-2011 current-salary-schedule-base salaries for eligible employees covered by the collective bargaining agreement.

For the 2011-12 contract year, contingent upon receipt of Teacher Salary Supplement (TSS), each eligible employee represented by the Heartland Education Association will receive moneys based on the 2010-11 schedule created as described above, in section H. Each eligible employee will have a step advancement on the schedule described above; staff members on longevity for one year or more will receive $327. Payment will be included in regular paychecks.

To learn more about these changes, please refer to the 2011-12 HEA contract soon to be posted on the Intranet under the Human Resources tab.

Teamsters - Classified Union

The Classified Union is in its second year of a two-year contract negotiated last year. This was a total package increase of 1.38%. The package included the increased cost of benefits, namely, increases in IPERS employer contribution from 6.95% to 8.07% and an increase in health insurance of 10%.

Additional improvements made to the Teamsters contract for the two years included a more detailed reduction-in-force process, adjustments to vacation for those who work less than 218 days as well as credit for years of service towards vacation accrual for those moving from part-time to full-time status.

Employment notifications are expected to be mailed out this week.

To learn more about these changes, please refer to the 2010-11 Teamster’s contract located on the Intranet under the Human Resources tab.

We hope to include an update for the Certified Non-Union and Classified Non-Union groups in The Connection following the June board meeting.

Please Complete SSLog Entries As Soon As Possible

This is your annual reminder about the School Services Log (SSLog). Please make sure to catch up any logging from this school year that needs to be done before you leave for the summer. We DO use the data on services to schools for our accreditation, so it is important that you capture the services you provided to schools. Also remember to log your learning team meetings. The reminder system will be disconnected for the summer months. If you continue to work and provide loggable services during the summer months, please remember to log them! Enjoy your summer break!

If you have any questions, contact Connor Hood at chood@aea11.k12.ia.us or ext. 14506.

Issue With Dropbox File Sharing Site for EERs

We recently discovered an issue with the way we are using Dropbox as a site to share files and collaborate on EERs. In the training that you may have viewed to learn about Dropbox, you were directed to put files in a public folder. Although it is highly unlikely that someone would have the information to do so, when files are in a public folder, they could be accessed through an Internet search. (Again, this is highly unlikely. A person would need some very specific information and knowledge to do so.) Because we want to be extremely cautious in our practices honoring confidentiality of students, we would like you to remove any documents with student identifiable information from “public” folders in Dropbox.

We will continue to evaluate the feasibility of using DropBox as a sharing tool. There are “individual” folders in Dropbox that will allow you to share folders with individuals you designate. These “individual” folders are not searchable on the Internet. If we decide to continue using Dropbox next school year, we will provide you with specific information to be sure your files are secure.

For now, please remove all student identifiable information from public folders in Dropbox. Feel free to contact Sharon Kurns at skurns@aea11.k12.ia.us or ext. 14362, Lynn McCartney at lmccartney@aea11.k12.ia.us or ext. 14677 or Julie Sypersma at jsypersma@aea11.k12.ia.us or ext. 14676 if you have questions or need assistance.
