iPad Training Registration Deadlines

Registration for this week’s iPad training sessions will close at noon tomorrow (July 31). Registration for all subsequent sessions will close two days prior to the session in order for our technology staff to have time to set up each participant’s iPad before the training.

Reminder: Staff iPads for 2012-2013 School Year

Our agency is expanding the use of iPads during the 2012-2013 school year. The iPad has proven to be a tool that will enhance the services we provide to schools. There is also great potential for us to learn new ways that this device can be used in the future to improve learning for both teachers and students. There are questions about whether or not the iPad will someday replace computers for some staff members. We hope to learn more about that through this initial implementation.

As an initial step, Regional Directors were asked to identify staff members with the greatest potential of utilizing an iPad. The names and positions of those individuals are listed below. If you were not one of the individuals identified and believe that the iPad could significantly impact your work, please have a conversation with your Regional Director. This will assist greatly with future decisions.

If you are one of the individuals identified to be assigned an iPad, you will need to attend training to receive your device. A list of training dates, locations and registration numbers are in The Connection blog. For individuals attending sessions off-contract before the school year starts or on Saturday, a $100 payment is available (funded through Teacher Quality). An addendum form will be available for you at the session. If none of the sessions work for you, we will be scheduling additional sessions later in August. Please click on the link for the session you wish to attend or go the Professional Development Catalog and type in the activity number. You will not find it by searching the calendar because attendance is limited to Heartland employees.

Upcoming Level I Investigator Training and Webinars

New this fall, Level I Investigator training will be offered conveniently on the statewide Moodle server. There will also be three live webinars for LEA personnel that will cover such tasks as managing the online training system, using the district administration features and running reports of completion. Click here for more information about the Level I Investigator training and webinars.

Parking at the Johnston Regional Education Center the Week of August 6th

We have approximately 30 new staff members who will begin their careers at Heartland on Tuesday, August 7 as they attend orientation activities. As a way to welcome new staff members, we will have parking spaces reserved for them in the center row of the Johnston Regional Education Center (6500) parking lot on August 7 only. New staff will also be attending other trainings during the remainder of that week but will only be treated to reserved parking on August 7. Current staff members should park in the spaces at the Administration Center (6445) parking lot if need be during this busy week. Thank you for helping to create a positive experience for new staff members’ first day as Heartland team members.

Reminder: Regional Director Assignments for 2012-13

All staff members were sent this information by email last week. It is being repeated here for your information.

We wanted you to be aware of changes taking place with our regional directors for the 2012-13 school year. As you may know, we had two resignations this summer among this group of leaders, which prompted the need to review current assignments. Some of the many factors we considered before making our decisions included:
• A desire for leadership stability in regions as much as possible;
• Considerations regarding the agency budget given recent reductions;
• Centralizing some hiring functions with the hope of improving coordination and strengthening recruiting; and
• The ability to further distribute and align district needs and agency work with the expertise and experience of our directors.

After considering these and other factors, we decided to absorb both of the vacancies and adjust assignments for some of our directors. Those districts directly impacted by these changes have already had contact with our Chief Administrator, Dr. Paula Vincent.

We are pleased to have significant stability within regions with this plan, but we know there will also be a number of changes, too. We value our relationships with you and are committed to having current and new regional directors work together to ensure smooth transitions and ongoing support to our staff and to our schools.

For those of you who work in the regions, regional directors will be confirming supervision lists this week, so you can expect to have a personal communication from your supervisor early next week. If you have any questions regarding these changes, please feel free to contact either one of us.

Thanks for all you do to improve the learning outcomes for the children and youth in our area. Have a great 2012-13 school year!
