The annual staff survey was sent to you by e-mail this morning. Remember to complete it and submit your feedback to the Agency. All staff members are required to complete the survey!

Required For Staff Who Work in Schools: Chapter 103 Training

If you have already completed the 103 training module in Moodle (due March 10) you may disregard this article. If you have not yet completed the 103 module in Moodle, please do so before this Friday. This module meets our training requirements for 103 that are outlined in the rule. The module contains state resources for your review and a brief quiz to show understanding of the materials. Instructions for accessing the module are described below.

Training requirements for school (including AEA) staff were added to the amended rule. Because of this, all Heartland staff who work in schools (when children are present) on a regular basis need to complete the training. If you have a question regarding if you are required to participate, please contact your supervisor.

We will be pulling the information regarding who has taken the module and submitting it for this year’s training requirements on Friday, May 14.

Directions for Accessing Moodle and Chapter 103 Training This learning opportunity will be done completely online, using Moodle. To get set up, you can go to Heartland’s Moodle site at: http://moodle.aea11.k12.ia.us/moodle.

When you are there, click the login link in the far upper right corner of the screen. On the next screen, if you’ve never used Heartland’s Moodle server, you’ll click “Create a New Account.” You will be asked to enter a username (Please use your Heartland e-mail address up to the @). For example, my username is sbrown). It will also ask for a password, full name and e-mail address. Once you’ve entered that information, click “Create My New Account.” A verification e-mail will be sent to you (you might want to check your spam filter/folder if you don't receive it). If you have taken a class on Moodle from Heartland before, you will want to test your username and password to make sure all is working.

Now that you can sign in to Moodle, you’re ready to access our Chapter 103 training. From the link above, you will click on the category “Positive Behavior Supports.” In there, you will see the module, “Review of Chapter 103.” Once inside the course, on the left hand side of the screen is a link that says “enroll me in this course.” Click that link to enroll prior to being able to take the quiz.

Once inside the course, you’ll see three sections. The first contains the videos of the state training that Heartland has created. The second contains links to various Chapter 103 resources available through the Department of Education. The last section of the module contains the quiz that is required to be completed with a minimum of 9/10 answers correct. If you have questions about accessing Moodle, please contact Sarah Brown at ext. 14380.

Applications Now Being Accepted for New Certified Staff Mentors

We’re preparing for next year’s new staff to come onboard, and we need to make sure we have mentors ready to support them. If you’re interested in being a mentor for a new certified staff member, please complete the application (click here) and return it to Sarah Brown at sbrown@aea11.k12.ia.us by May 21. If you have trouble completing the application in Adobe Reader, please print it out, complete it, scan it and e-mail it to Sarah.

Even if you are currently a mentor, you’ll need to complete this application so we can keep track of your continued interest as well as any office changes that may have occurred. As new staff members are hired and assigned to districts, mentors will be selected from the applicants. Thank you for your continued support of our new staff! Please contact Sarah Brown with any questions.

Iowa Core Update

The Heartland Iowa Core team received clarification and answers to several questions that were raised during the April Leadership for the Iowa Core training sessions. For more information, contact Linda Biermann Hoobin, at lhoobin@aea11.k12.ia.us.

1. The first response is related to questions about fields that were proposed to be added to the EdInfo site for implementation plan submission. Only one new field will be added this year. It will be “Evidence of Progress.” Page 55 of the Iowa Core Self-Study and Implementation Plan handbook provides the definition of evidence of progress. It states, “Describe what evidence will be used to show progress related to the outcome and related targets/actions. Depending on the outcome and the desired results, the evidence will be gathered and organized at the district, building and/or classroom level. This evidence will be an extension of the data considered when the Self-Study was conducted and should expand on what is already known about the district in relation to the outcome(s) and related target/actions. It is important that there is continuity between outcomes, targets/actions and the data used to establish priorities and the evidence that is used to effectively chart progress and make appropriate adjustments to the work. The original evidence serves as the basis for monitoring the progress of the Implementation Plan as the activities are conducted. Evidence may include a combination of student data, data related to staff engagement and implementation, documents and artifacts demonstrating parent involvement and/or community involvement. If nothing will be initiated in the way of planning and/or implementation for an outcome until sometime after July 1, 2010, include a statement to that effect and refer to the target date for startup.” The Evidence of Progress field was slated to be added to EdInfo by May 1, 2010. The state network team will discuss “indicators of success” during the 2010-11 school year.

2. From the state network team, a response to a question about specially accredited schools: “Specially accredited” schools (those that do not have to do a CSIP or an APR) do not have to complete an implementation plan.

3. The Iowa Core teams across the state have been asked to encourage districts not to use the term “ongoing” in their implementation plans; instead, consider using benchmarks in the timeline.

4. New information: Please delete the word Curriculum in Iowa Core Curriculum and only use Iowa Core. A new logo will be developed.

5. Registration is still open for Heartland’s Summer Institute for Effective Instruction to be held at Johnston High School, June 15-17, 2010. The Institute will focus on actions from outcome 6 of the Iowa Core, including developing and sustaining collaborative teams and exploring the characteristics of effective instruction as identified in the Iowa Core.
