Vincent Named to New Commission on Educator Leadership and Compensation
Last week the Iowa Department of Education announced the 20 Iowans who will serve on a state commission that will play a key role in implementing the statewide Teacher Leadership and Compensation System, a significant part of the new education reform law adopted by the Iowa Legislature. Heartland AEA chief administrator Paula Vincent is representing Iowa’s AEAs on this new commission.

School districts that pursue state funding for a local teacher leadership system will submit plans to the Commission on Educator Leadership and Compensation. Commission members will evaluate plans and make recommendations on approval to the Iowa Department of Education.

The goal of the Teacher Leadership and Compensation System is to help schools raise student achievement by strengthening classroom instruction. The system allows effective teachers to pursue leadership opportunities for additional pay, attracts promising new teachers with competitive starting salaries and more support, and fosters greater collaboration for all teachers to learn from each other.

The Commission on Educator Leadership and Compensation represents a cross-section of education stakeholders, including teachers, education associations, parents and business leaders. Members were appointed by the Iowa State Education Association, School Administrators of Iowa, the Iowa Association of School Boards, the Area Education Agencies and the Iowa Department of Education.

Board Member Borgen Honored in 2013 “Women of Influence”
Margaret Borgen, a member of the Heartland AEA board of directors, has been named an honoree of the Des Moines Business Record’s 2013 “Women of Influence.” The Women of Influence awards celebrate the work of women who have made a difference in their communities.

As the Business Record says, “They’ve devoted their lives to doing things most wouldn’t. They’ve spent countless hours on various boards, and they’ve blazed a trail either personally or professionally for other women to follow.”

Margaret has been a member of the Agency’s board of directors since 2007, and she has also served on the Des Moines Public Schools’ board of education for nine years and the Iowa Association of School Boards’ board of directors. In previous years, she was the president of the Des Moines Council of PTAs and the Iowa PTA and was vice president of the National PTA. Margaret is a former middle school and high school teacher and was the director of an alternative high school.
