HeartBeat - Summer Edition

Star Staff
This message was sent by Angie Dugger (School Psychologist/AD).

                              Emily Donovan
Jen Gilmore

I would like to express my deep gratitude to Emily Donovan (School Social Worker/AD) and Jen Gilmore (School Social Worker/IN) on the Challenging Behavior & Autism Team. As a first-year school psychologist trained out-of-state, I knew very little of ABA principles and application within a school setting. After completing their "Survey of Applied Behavior Analysis Principles and Applications" three-part series, I have gained invaluable knowledge and practice in supporting some of our most vulnerable students. Their skills, patience and passion for student advocacy are inspiring. I've especially appreciated Emily's dedication to going above and beyond in supporting districts helping them to feel more confident in addressing behavioral concerns. Also, I've learned so much from her at our regional behavior consultation meetings and hands-on assessment experiences within the regional school setting. Coming from another state, I know these are all very unique training experiences not available to most practitioners, so I appreciate them that much more. I feel honored to have learned from these amazing behavior analysts/trainers! Thank you, Emily and Jen!!

Happy Anniversary!

Happy one-year Heartland AEA anniversary to our chief administrator, Jon Sheldahl! You made it!

Conference For One of Iowa’s Fastest Growing Student Populations
Our own Stephaney Jones-Vo (ESL/Diversity Consultant/JO) was featured in this WHO TV Channel 13 news piece about the annual Our Kids Summer Institute! This professional development opportunity for educators around the state just finished its 10th year and introduces educators to strategies to use to help English Language Learners in the classroom.

Secondary Transition Topic of Two-Day Workshop for Educators
A two-day workshop aimed at improving outcomes for high school students with disabilities was held June 23 & 24 at Heartland AEA’s Johnston Regional Education Center and attended by 100 teachers and AEA staff members.

The workshop, titled “Improving the 4 ‘G’ Transition Network for Students with IEPs - Growth, Gap, Graduation and Gateways,” tied specifically to Heartland AEA’s agency-wide goals of increasing learning growth for students, decreasing the gap in achievement, increasing graduation rates and increasing gateways to post-secondary success.

The event provided tools and resources for parents, teachers and AEA staff to draw on when assisting high school students with disabilities in planning for living, learning and working after high school.

“This is the fifth year we have provided this learning opportunity, and we’re happy to see it continue to grow each year,” Sue Severson (Special Education Consultant/JO) said. “This year we had 100 participants, and it’s exciting to see so many educators willing to make a difference for all students.” Severson, along with Julie McGinnis (Special Education Consultant/IN) planned the workshop.

Highlights of Day 1 of the workshop included a panel discussion about preparing students for life after high school and a session about the University of Iowa’s REACH program. Panel participants were (pictured in the photo above, left to right) Matt Heldenbrand, Windsor Heights Hy-Vee; Angela Oberlander, former Search client now working at the Windsor Heights Hy-Vee; Sally Pederson, former Iowa Lt. Governor, board chair of the University of Iowa REACH program and mother of an adult son with autism; Marsha Burright, Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services; and Pamela Ries, University of Iowa REACH program.

The University of Iowa’s REACH program is a two-year, transition certificate program for students with disabilities. UI REACH provides a campus experience to empower young adults to become independent, engaged members of the community. Students experience courses, campus life and career preparation to assist them in reaching their full potential.

Day 2 included information about 504 accommodation plans, social skills and a presentation from Des Moines Area Community College about its Career Academies.

Participants reported positive experiences and were thankful to leave the workshop armed with resources to use with students and families.

“It is nice to attend a conference where the content is applicable and can be taken back to the classroom and applied to students and teaching methods,” Hillary Faber, Waukee special education teacher, said.

“Being able to hear and learn about resources and materials from a variety of people and agencies builds connections and allows us to work with and serve students to help them be successful adults in the community,” Karen Junko (Special Education Consultant/KN) said.

“It has been a wonderful opportunity to get updated information on various resources to share with families,” Maureen Scheltzbaum (Parent Coordinator/IN) said.

Vincent Named to New Commission on Educator Leadership and Compensation
Last week the Iowa Department of Education announced the 20 Iowans who will serve on a state commission that will play a key role in implementing the statewide Teacher Leadership and Compensation System, a significant part of the new education reform law adopted by the Iowa Legislature. Heartland AEA chief administrator Paula Vincent is representing Iowa’s AEAs on this new commission.

School districts that pursue state funding for a local teacher leadership system will submit plans to the Commission on Educator Leadership and Compensation. Commission members will evaluate plans and make recommendations on approval to the Iowa Department of Education.

The goal of the Teacher Leadership and Compensation System is to help schools raise student achievement by strengthening classroom instruction. The system allows effective teachers to pursue leadership opportunities for additional pay, attracts promising new teachers with competitive starting salaries and more support, and fosters greater collaboration for all teachers to learn from each other.

The Commission on Educator Leadership and Compensation represents a cross-section of education stakeholders, including teachers, education associations, parents and business leaders. Members were appointed by the Iowa State Education Association, School Administrators of Iowa, the Iowa Association of School Boards, the Area Education Agencies and the Iowa Department of Education.

Board Member Borgen Honored in 2013 “Women of Influence”
Margaret Borgen, a member of the Heartland AEA board of directors, has been named an honoree of the Des Moines Business Record’s 2013 “Women of Influence.” The Women of Influence awards celebrate the work of women who have made a difference in their communities.

As the Business Record says, “They’ve devoted their lives to doing things most wouldn’t. They’ve spent countless hours on various boards, and they’ve blazed a trail either personally or professionally for other women to follow.”

Margaret has been a member of the Agency’s board of directors since 2007, and she has also served on the Des Moines Public Schools’ board of education for nine years and the Iowa Association of School Boards’ board of directors. In previous years, she was the president of the Des Moines Council of PTAs and the Iowa PTA and was vice president of the National PTA. Margaret is a former middle school and high school teacher and was the director of an alternative high school.
